This weekend at mosport is the vintage grand prix. Lots of old cars. Vintage F5000 cars were running.

Kinja'd!!!

Might be the last known image of the driver Jeff in his 1972 Lola T300.

In a written statement from the GM & President of CTMP:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jeffrey Green,” said Myles Brandt, President and General Manager of Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. “We offer our deepest condolences and prayers to his family, friends and fellow competitors.”

The remaining F5000 races for this weekend have been cancelled. The series intends to run “Missing Man” formation laps at 1:00pm(today) in honour of Jeffrey Green.

It was a brake failure at the end of the andretti straight. Those cars have no crumple zone, and the drivers legs are even further forward on the axle than 70s F1 cars.

You can shit on how new race cars are too safe (ex: the F1 halo), but they are great in ways. Also I get why the owners of vintage race cars when they race them don’t push it to the max, some things are too priceless wreck.

As a track official locally, this is alway in the back of my mind when we’re running vintage cars. Very sad.

F5000 has to be one of the most dangerous classes in racing. All the speed of an F1 car and none of the safety of a modern one. And I dunno about over there, but in NZ it’s a seriously contested class - they don’t hold back.

I guess the drivers know the risks, but....shit.

This wasn’t the only sad moment during the weekend. On Saturday a spectator died during one Finnish rally near Seinäjoki. A car veered of the road and hit something which started a massive roll. The car then rolled over the road to the outside of a turn and hit unknown number of spectators. One died at the scene.

The area wasn’t fenced off as a dangerous zone but it’s a general rule not to go spectating outside of any turns.

This car was raced originally in the upper Midwest by Jerry Hansen.

being 61 wouldn’t help either.
